Sunday Salon

Some odds and ends this week in Sunday Salon. First of all, thanks to everyone who participated in my first ever giveaway! I announce the winner of "The Local News" by Miriam Gershow tomorrow.

Last week in a comment in my Four Things post, Laura from Gypsea Tree asked what my favorite books were. I know it was a four things post, but I never have been good at following the rules. So here, in no particular order, are what I would say (today anyway) are my favorite books:

1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
2. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
3. Ragtime by E. L. Doctrow
4. The Color Purple by Alice Walker
5. Chesapeake by James Michener
6. Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
7. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Today we celebrated my son's 21st birthday! We actually helped him kick off the celebration last night when he let us go along with him to have his first drink in a bar. I was glad to be there, partly because I was able to make sure he didn't imbibe too much, but mostly because I was please that he would want to include us. Today we had a lunch of his favorites: Asian chicken salad, crab rangoon, red velvet cake, and homemade ice cream with homemade chocolate sauce. I can't believe it's been 21 years since I first held him! The photo is my husband and son on Father's Day.

  1. What a great list! Thanks for the reply. Some I've read and others I'm inspired to look up. Happy Birthday to your son! How wonderful that you all celebrated together!

  2. I like "Lovely Bones" a lot also. The whole concept is so imaginative. I have "Almost Moon", her second novel, on my TBR pile.

  3. What a nice picture! I suppose you aren't picking your son up much and holding him like you did 21 years ago! You've gotta like a guy who loves red velvet cake with homemade ice cream and sauce!

  4. It doesn't matter how old our kids get, they are always babies in our eyes. Happy 21st bday to your son!

  5. I'm with you on The Color Purple. The only other one I've read is The Lovely Bones.
I have one of those, a son, and they do grow up fast. Mine is 36 and I can't believe it.
